RED VEINS

WHAT ARE RED VEINS?
Red veins are also called “thread veins” or “broken capillaries” or “Telangiectasis”. These are a permanent dilation of the small superficial blood vessels on the face and body which affects both men and women from the age of 20. They may appear individually or as a very fine network as wavy red lines (thread veins), “red spots” or red spots with red lines radiating from them (Spider Naevi).

There are numerous causes including ageing, hereditary, pregnancy, smoking, energetic sports, temperature extremes or harsh weather exposures, hormones, skin fragility and use of topical steroids.

RED SPOTS

These are a concentration of blood present on the surface of the skin and are usually bright red in colour.

SPIDER NAVEVI

This is a small, raised, centrally dilated blood vessel having the appearance of a blood spot, with smaller dilated capillaries radiating from it, rather like the legs of a spider. They are commonly found on the cheeks and upper chest area and are often caused by damage to the skin (squeezing) or an injury to the face or during pregnancy when hormonal changes occur.

SKIN TAGS
WHAT ARE SKIN TAGS?
A skin tag is a common, harmless and benign skin growth that looks like a small piece of hanging skin which affects both men and women from the age of 30. Although they vary in appearance, they are usually smooth or slightly wrinkled and irregular, flesh coloured or slightly browner. Early skin tags are as small as a flattened pin point bump that can grow up to as large as a grape. They typically occur on the neck, underarms, eyelids, under the breast and in the groin-in a location where the skin is constantly rubbed against skin or clothing.

THE TREATMENT
The aim of the treatment is to cut off the blood supply to the growth so that it withers and dies. The tags turn a little darker in colour, shrink and form a small scab which drops of within 5 days (depending on the size).

WARTS AND CRUSTS

These are caused by the thickening of the skin due to ageing. They look like brown, crusty lumps stuck on the skin and are completely harmless. They can be quickly and successfully removed. The aftercare and after effects are the same as “Skin Tag” removal.

AGE SPOTS

Age spots (also known as sun spots and liver spots), are harmless yellow or brown flat discolourations of the skin. They are mostly found on the back of the hands, forearms, face and shoulders in people above the age of 40. They are commonly a sign of sun damage by having the skin exposed to the sun over many years. They can be quickly and successfully removed. The aftercare and after effects are the same as “Skin Tag” removal.

MILIA

These are tiny, hard, white dots located under the upper layer of the skin. They contain a build up of solidified sebum (the skin’s natural oil) from the oil glands and are often found around the eye area, on the cheeks, nose and chin. Some experts believe that milia are caused by sun induced changes as the skin ages or dry, dehydrated skin (due to poor skincare or facial products which are too strong). Others believe use of overly rich skin creams are the cause or a generic predisposition towards them.
To remove them, a current is passed into the milia which destroys them, allowing them to disappear by themselves after a couple of days.

AFTER EFFECTS & AFTERCARE FOR SKIN TAGS, WARTS & CRUSTS, AGE SPOTS & MILIA

AFTER EFFECTS
The surrounding skin may appear red and feel warm for a few hours after the treatment. There is no scarring, no side effects on the skin and only a short healing time.

AFTERCARE
For 2-3 days after removal, bathe the area only in cool water and avoid the use of products on the skin e.g. soap, cleanser, moisturiser, perfumed products, make-up and deodorant as this may pose an infection risk. Each time the area is bathed, apply Sterex Gel as this is anti-bacterial and promotes the healing of the skin. Keep applying this over the treated area until the healing is complete.
